30 Minutes before Stepping onto a Journey of Faith

Excitement is looming in the air. Last night sms-ed Edmond and he was telling me that things are getting kinda excited over there in KL. Somehow, things are also getting excited for me here in KK too. In another half hour or so, Von Koh will be fetching me and we gonna have lunch (that's exciting as well, ok?) then send me to SHC to wait for Uncle Serjius. Brenda and myself will be following him to Bundu Tuhan...

Alright, time to go... Von Koh is on her way... Please pray for me and all others who are attending the retreat... Pray that my heart will be open to what God wants to heal and may I be able to receive the joy and peace of God through the retreat. Amen!

Amazement of these Ph.D people

"There was once upon a time when a girl wanted so much to study medicine. As she continued growing, she dreamed of becoming a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D). Alas! Until this day, none of the two was realized. Now, she's so amazed by these Ph.D people, not only their talents and skills in research, but also their creativity."

Yeah... It was really an amazement to actually find myself searching and continue being amazed by the choreographs and the movements they made... These skills, talents and creativities... All are from God to God for His People. And yeah... WE are His People... I, in particular, love "A Molecular Dance in the Blood" by Prof. Vince LiCata, made easy to understand the whole concept of the tetramer in RBC (the hemoglobins), and also the modern dance choreographed and danced by the scientist Dr. Miriam Sach herself about cerebral activation patterns. Besides that, the other two categories (graduate student and popular choice) also performed excellently. The Physics Tango by Landry was great... I can't imagine how a person could coordinate so well their movements. Do notice that the male dancer would put his foot and changed the whole dance pattern while the female dance seemed to float smoothly passed all these. I bet they had practised for ages in order to shoot this vidz. The lovely sunshine and plum fairy in Sue Lynn Lau's vidz depicts her hypothesis of Vitamin D affecting beta cells in liver in secretion of insulin. All these stuffs, so scientific, yet so beautiful... I guess that's the real beauty of science for the benefit of mankind.

Here's the full article as taken from Biotechniques, a scientific journal which I still subscribe till now. To view the original article, please click here.

New York, NY, Nov. 20—The winners of the 2009 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) “Dance Your Ph.D.” contest have been announced.

A panel of nine judges has selected a winner in each of the four categories from the entries posted on YouTube. The dances were judged on creativity in expressing the scientific essence of their theses through dance.

Each winner will be paired with a professional choreographer who will create a four-part dance based on one of the Ph.D.'s published peer-reviewed research papers. The four dances will be performed at the 2009 AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The winners are, by category:

* Graduate Student: Sue Lynn Lau from Garvan Institute of Medical Research/University of Sydney, Australia, for the interpretation of her advisor's paper “The role of vitamin D in beta cell function”

* Post-Doc: Miriam Sach, post-doctoral researcher, University of California, San Diego, “Cerebral activation patterns induced by inflection of regular and irregular verbs with positron emission tomography. A comparison between single subject and group analysis”

* Professor: Vince LiCata, professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, “Resolving pathways of functional coupling in human hemoglobin using quantitative low temperature isoelectric focusing of asymmetric mutant hybrids”

* Popular Choice: Markita Landry, graduate student, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, “Single molecule measurements of protelomerase TelK-DNA complexes”

The contest was open to anyone who had received or was pursuing a Ph.D. in any scientific field or science-related fields, and challenged Ph.D.s to communicate their research through body movements.

“In my view, song and dance should be an integral part of culture,” said Lau, 2009 Dance Your Ph.D. winner, in a press release from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. “Its how people communicated in the past, how oral traditions were handed down. Somehow we seem to have lost that participative aspect to music in our society.”

According to the organizers, last years inaugural Dance Your Ph.D. contest was very successful, and researchers from around the world were eager to compete in this years contest.

2009 Dance Your Ph.D Winner (Post-Doc category - Miriam Sach)

Ph.D.: Cerebral activation patterns induced by inflection of regular and irregular verbs with positron emission tomography.

The findings of this thesis demonstrate that regular and irregular verbs are processed in the same neural network as opposed to separate cortical areas for regular and irregular verb inflection.

This piece is subdivided into 3 sections:
1.) Introduction of regular verbs,
2.) Introduction of irregular verbs,
3.) Common neural network of regular and irregular verb inflection.

1.) Regular verbs are represented by the walking at the very beginning of this piece.
The walking is simple, straight forward and without irregularities. It is accompanied by the sound of crackling fire a metaphor for the firing neurons.

2.) In contrast, irregular verbs are represented by a huge variety of different movements: jumps, slides, turns, rolls, level changes. Irregularities are also displayed musically by using syncopes and off-beat emphasis in percussion as well as further changes in instruments.

3.) The sound of the falling rain is a cleansing moment with no movements to introduce the final section of the dance: the common neural network of regular and irregular verb processing. It is the first time that symmetrical movements occur to emphasize the common network for both verb forms. In addition, both regular and irregular movements are shown to elucidate the presence of both entities in this network.

Overall, fiber connections in the brain representing the connections between regular and irregular verbs are shown by wavy arm movements.

2009 Dance Your Ph.D Winner (Professor category - Vince LiCata)

Human hemoglobin, in your blood cells, displays precise changes in internal cooperativity in response to exactly how the first two oxygens bind to it.

This video depicts, in dance, the study: "Resolving Pathways of Functional Coupling in Human Hemoglobin Using Quantitative Low Temperature Isoelectric Focusing of Asymmetric Mutant Hybrids"

Hemoglobin is a 4-subunit protein (a tetramer) that binds and transports oxygen. Individual alpha-subunits and beta-subunits come together to form almost inseparable dimers (boy-girl pairs with matching eye-goggle and gloves in the dance). How dimer-1 interacts with dimer-2 in the whole protein, however, depends on the exact combination of bound oxygens (white balls). If one dimer gets 2 oxygens to itself, cooperativity is reduced and it does not interact well with the other dimer. If both dimers get at least 1 oxygen, they cooperate with each other, and usually bind 2 more oxygen molecules (for a total of 4). In normal hemoglobin, the two dimers are identical. Hemoglobin tetramers with two differing types of dimers are called "asymmetric mutant hybrids" (hence the different colored goggles and gloves on each "dance-mer"). "Low temperature isoelectric focusing" is a method that freezes (literally) and takes a snapshot of the dimer-dimer interactions at different times.

2009 Dance Your Ph.D. Winner (Graduate Student - Sue Lynn Lau)

PhD title: The role of Vitamin D in beta-cell function.

Graduate student: Sue Lynn Lau

Performers: Members of the Diabetes & Transcription Factors Lab Group

Synopsis: Every PhD begins in the dark, but it takes only a few bright sparks to kindle the flame of discovery...

The crucial role of sunlight exposure as the most important source of vitamin D in humans is highlighted. Vitamin D is newly recognised to be involved in the function of many organ systems, including the beta cells of the endocrine pancreas. These cells make insulin in response to glucose stimulation.

Initially, the beta cells are in an unstimulated state, with minimal activity. At the arrival of the sugar plum fairy (symbolising glucose), the cells are able to sense the presence of glucose through the enzyme glucokinase. When glucose enters the cells through glut 2 transporters (marshmallow feeding), it is metabolised to produce the energy molecule, ATP. Through a number of steps, this leads to a rise in positive charge inside the cell, which ultimately triggers the export of insulin-storing granules by a process known as exocytosis (depicted here by the blowing of bubbles). Normal insulin secretion requires the coordinated function of beta cells via intercellular connections and communications as they work in concert.

We are investigating whether vitamin D has an effect in improving beta-cell function and increasing insulin secretion... are they "walking on sunshine"??

2009 Dance Your Ph.D Winner (Popular Choice Winner - Markita Landry)

I copied this from Youtube page. Personally, I think this is super duper cool~ Dance Your Ph.D~ ^^ I'll update more when I get back from Bundu Tuhan~~

Our official entry for the 2009 AAAS Science Dance Contest.

Title of PhD thesis: Single Molecule Measurements of Protelomerase TelK-DNA Complexes

Name:Markita Landry

University:University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

Dancers: Florin Bora and Markita Landry

Expected year of completion: 2009 and 2011, respectively.
My Ph.D. work involves the use of a relatively new technology called optical trapping. Using focused laser beams, (1064 nm = infrared beam = red dress) can trap dielectric particles (we use grey/black microspheres = black shirt). The laser holds the beads in place, but it is ultimately the motion of the beads that allow us to take our measurements, and that must be followed extremely precisely (in our case, our resolution is 3.4 angstroms, which is a very small length scale). This precision with regards to following the motion of the beads was my motivation for expressing the theory of optical trapping through tango, which is a dance that is heavily dependent on the ability of the follower to follow the steps that are led. These steps are non-deterministic and are made up by the leader on a real-time basis, so the follower never knows what to expect, and must always be acutely aware of their partners motions to follow correctly.

For my Ph.D. work, I am using optical tweezers to study protein-DNA interactions on a very small scale. I am studying a prokaryotic version of Telomerase, Protelomerase TelK. Telomerases are an active field of study due to their major role in protecting cells against premature aging. However, hyperactive telomerases are also involved in various forms of cancer. Our goal is to characterize the mechanism by which TelK forms DNA hairpins in its DNA substrate, and how the kinetics and binding modes of this mechanism vary with applied tension.

The Age of Movie Days

There was a period of time since 2007 to 2008 where watching movies was like going shopping for me. There was a friend, my constant companion for more than 365 days, who would be crazy enough to watch movies with me. All genre I'd say, unless it was a super-bad reviewed movie, we'd go for the movies for sure. I'd say my favourites were "Ratatouille" and "The Game Plan"... I remember watching "Blacksheep" somewhere last year, a movie on bioterrorism and genetic mutation and weird sheeps being vampire-ish. It was sort of a scary movie for me, I think I had lots of sound effects also. Somehow I sort of regretted not watching "Evan Almighty" instead... But God had a greater plan than just movies for me about "Evan Almighty"... But of course, "Blacksheep" is much better than "Quarantine" as there was an ending to the story, with the promise of a sequel (which I might not watch it if I were to go alone~~~)

Okay... What was the gist is this... I met some new friends right after the movie that day... My friend's friend and his girlfriend. Surprisingly the gf and me sort of struck a chord together and kept in touch up to this point... Ok, what's the other point? Few days ago she sent me this sms (guessing chinese characters making a sentence) which I couldn't decipher. After figuring out for a day plus, I gave in and asked her for answers... Well, sms went after sms... So she mentioned about watching movie together when we are free since we hadn't been watching any movie together since June if not mistaken... My friend, myself, her boyfriend and herself. Names were mentioned specifically! Haha! Great... At a point... I was a bit stuck as I didn't really know how to reply... I could only answer the typical "See how la when I get back" sort of answer knowing that chances are we probably wouldn't watch movies together until further notice. What a fib I am!! Sorry, gal... Too many things happened recently... If only you knew, but I don't you would... LOL! Sad tale, but I believe more happy tales will come for us soon~~~ Readers dearie... Pray for us! (those who know what story I have now and those who don't know...)

Now I can only ask God to provide me with the strength to carry on today... Another long and interesting day later~~ Can't wait to go to the beach with my colleagues~~ Yaya!!! I want good lunch also with Mirina... Hahahahaha!

Counting down... 28.5 hours to Inner Healing journey...

Entrance/Exit of Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Alright, that's all for my report... I shall look forward to see some squels from you all~~ LOL! Basically after that we went home, I managed to stop by Stella Maris blessed sacrament for a few moments of silence with God. In fact, I became so in awe with God the moment I stepped into the wildlife park and started seeing animals in front of me. Seeing how the youngs were being taken care by their mothers... The love that even animals would shower on their offsprings... What more us, as humans, to God? Besides the verse, "Lord I'm amazed by You...", there were 101 things on my mind at that moment. I thank God for all that happened... because I know all occurred for a reason... And I choose to believe He meant business when He broke me into pieces... Business which will prosper me and transform my life into what God calls me to be. Till the day comes... Only one single word I can use... PERSEVERANCE.

At night I drove to Servay after daily mass to buy Tenom coffee (my mom's instruction) to be brought back to Johor next week, and then decided to drop by 1Borneo for some shopping spree. Managed to grab some lovely coloured undergarments at Tune Store, a black, really really formal dress and a working blouse in Niichii. All up to 70% discount. In between that I bought Zane's wedding gift (since I couldn't make it for her wedding due to my scheduled Inner Healing and Transformation Seminar from 27-30 November) and also something for Sislady.

Then I came home and finally bought my air tickets for CNY. Phew! Spent more than RM800 in a day! What a record for myself!!!! The tickets cost me RM500++. I wish AirAsia would be more considerate in increasing the price of the tickets as the time draws near to festive season. As a teacher, I feel the pinch whenever I feel like flying home during school holidays and festive seasons... Ouch!!!

Overall it was an achievement for me to get many things done in a single day. Now what is left is tomorrow - wrapping Zane's wedding gift, meeting Mirina for lunch and an outing with my colleagues in Tanjung Aru... Then it'll be Thursday... Where Brenda and myself will travel with some people to Bundu Tuhan for our retreat... Can't wait to taste and see God on the mountain... I wonder how Elijah felt when he felt the presence of God in the gentle breeze and how Moses felt when he worshipped God at the mountain top that his face glowed until he had to cover with a cloth? I want that experience. I know I will.

Hehe! I shall share about the Prodigal Son in tomorrow's entry...

Till then... God bless us all!

The Return of the Prodigal Son

This is what I'm currently reading... I first encountered the articles from this book in another book which I love... The Dance of Life... It's a series of articles from Henri Nouwen.

I'm sure most of you know about the bible passage on The Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32). Yups, the whole book practically speaks about different perspectives of the parable that Jesus gave us... The younger son, the elder son and the father. I'm starting on the younger son today... ^^

So now I'm at the comfort of reading it... There's a part of the prologue to the book which I'd like to share with you all here...

These years at Daybreak have not been easy. There has been much inner struggle, and there has been mental, emotional, and spiritual pain. Nothing, absolutely nothing, had about it the quality of having arrived. However, the move from Harvard to L'Arche proved to be but one little step from bystander to participant, from judge to repentant sinner, from teacher about love to being loved as the beloved. I really did not have an inkling how deeply rooted my resistance was and how agonizing it would be to "come to my senses", fall on my knees, and let my tears flow freely. I did not realize how hard it would be to become truly part of the great event that Rembrandt's painting portrays.

Each little step toward the centre seemed like an impossible demand, a demand requiring me to let go one more time from wanting to be in control, to give up one more time the desire to predict life, to die one more time to the fear of not knowing where it all will lead, and to surrender one more time to a love that knows no limits. And still, I knew that I would never be able to live the great commandment to love without allowing myself to be loved without conditions or prerequisites. The journey from teaching about love to allowing myself to be loved proved much longer than I realized.

This part is one beautiful part of this book I'm reading. I'm sure I'll discover more in time to come as I continue reading. I'll update you guys if I encounter any parts suitable to be shared publicly.

Till then... Pax et Bonum.

What is Wrong Timing?

I'd say that "wrong timing" is when another person thinks he/she is at the position to conclude and make believe that it is THE right timing to do something which was conventional yet unacceptable at that particular time frame by which doing that thing will cause more wreckage rather than bandage.

I've just experienced a super wrong timing scenario last night. I guess everything starts from zero again, including renewal of the decision I've made on 18 November 2008. I hope I won't need to stop Friendster as well... If required, I will do it. Even blogging too if that helps me.

I know God is with me in this. He has been with me through all the dumps in my life. This one is just a slightly larger pothole for Him, but together we'll go through it. That's the promise He has made to me, to us all. And in response I will say, "The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want." All because I know, Jesus the Good Shepherd, is breaking my legs so that He can carry me over His shoulders when He found me stuck somewhere in the rocky ground. Though it hurts, but it is for me own good. God will never forsake His sheep. Don't you ever tell me that you don't think God is with me.

To whom it may concern:
I guess my decision stays until further notice. There is no point informing me through third party that you are willing to receive and welcome anybody when you were the one who chose to run away in the first place and shift your heart elsewhere. And there is no point that the third party being so patronizing, expressing your thoughts to me. The third party is only creating more chaos in an already chaotic scenario.

Quarantine & Madagascar 2

We had a movie marathon! After watching gruesome Quarantine, we decided to watch Madagascar 2 to "wash down" the after-taste of Quarantine. I still find missing link to the former, but somehow there will never be an answer... But through the wikipedia's explanation, I finally know that the guy we saw at the end of the show who ate Scott (the cameraman) in the movie was the "man from Boston" who rented the penthouse. (Joanne, apparently they went up instead of going down...)

Good thing I enjoyed both the movies as much, though I actually had watched Madagascar 2 last week with some others. I still laughed at all the wrong spots. It doesn't really matter... It made me cry a little... Especially the part when Alex went to find Marty, and the part where Melman expressed how Moto-moto should treat his beloved Gloria. It made me sad somehow... I don't know why... Twice also the same scenes. I guess these two scenes probably reminded me of something... Which I still don't know. Oh... Be it!

Thank God for the "money providence" by CG. I shall return what was given next month. I had already expected the answer to be "No" when I thickened my face to borrow RM50 from somebody who I shouldn't even have asked. I was merely lazy to drive down to the gas station to get my last RM50 from the MBB ATM, which I already did when I received the sms reply. So it doesn't really make any difference.

LOL! Till then... Adios amigo~

New Playlist

Tada! Now you have a selection of 10 songs from my cute bear bear playlist at the side bar~ :) Enjoy the selection that I love... All praise and worship songs for God to God from His people!

Getting ready for dance class in 10 minutes time... Still deciding which attire to wear since I'm serving in choir later during Christ the King mass in church. It's black and white today... Tonight I'll be going out with my CG to 1Borneo... I shall declare that I'm officially broke once we finish dinner. LOL! Thank God my housemate left me with some rice, eggs, hotdog and seasonings. So I guess I can survive 4 days with less than RM30... So besides the daily trips to St. Simon's for mass, I shouldn't be driving around too much as I doubt I'd have money to pump in fuel. A lunch with Dr. Yip on Tuesday? Should be ok... *noting down*

Oh... How I wish pay-day will come soon~~~ Another 4 days to pay-day~~~ I believe God can let me survive through all these... Jesus, I trust in You!

How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands
Beginning and the end
Beginning and the end

The Godhead Three in One
Father Spirit Son
The Lion and the Lamb
The Lion and the Lamb

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Name above all names
Worthy of all praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God

Name above all names
Worthy of all praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Note: This is the lyrics for the song that's been playing on my blog... Sorry I don't know how to "repeat" the song. So until I know how, just click the "play" button when the song stops. I'll update with other songs soon~~ Have a nice day! ^^

Attack? LOL!

I wasn't attacked. I was just disturbed by an email that somebody sent out of the sudden. Lord, have mercy on me for my moment of flaring up and evilness lurked in the air one moment ago. Rest assure, no reply will be sent out, no response (except for this entry) will be given, no question will be asked. Nothing. Enough is enough. I stand firm on God's promise on patient endurance a.k.a. perseverance on the issue I'm facing now.

Just another reminder, my beloved readers... I no longer check my FaceBook until further notice. If any disturbance on Friendster is sensed, I'll immediately pull myself out and stop updating on FS as well. If MSN/YM or any of my emails is being disturbed, I'll do the same to them by all means too.

Current updates will either be on this blog or on MSN/YM/email...

Good night, Malaysians who love to sleep during rainy season.

Taken from the book "Just Like Jesus" by Max Lucado

The fisherman fixes his eyes on the boat. The girl fixes her eyes on the boy. The disciple fixes his eyes on the Savior.

That's what Matthew did. Matthew, if you remember, was converted at work. According to his resume, he was a revenue consultant for the government. According to his neighbors, he was a crook. He kept a tax booth and a hand extended at the street corner. That's where he was the day he saw Jesus. "Follow me," the Master said, and Matthew did. And in the very next verse we find Jesus sitting at Matthew's dining room table. "Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house" (Matt. 9:10).

A curbside conversion couldn't satisfy his heart, so Matthew took Jesus home. Something happens over a dinner table that doesn't happen over an office desk. Take off the tie, heat up the grill, break out the sodas, and spend the evening with the suspender of the stars. "You know, Jesus, forgive me for asking but I've always wanted to know..."

Again, through the giving of the invitation is impressive, the acceptance is more so. Didn't matter to Jesus that Matthew was a thief. Didn't matter to Jesus that Matthew had built a split-level house with the proceeds of extortion. What did matter was that Matthew wanted to know Jesus, and since God "reward those who truly want to find him" (Heb. 11:6), Matthew was rewarded with the presence of Christ in his home.
